A brief Look at Samsung Galaxy S Series

Galaxy S phones are Samsung’s premium Android high-end flagship phones. Entering its 6th iteration this year, Samsung Galaxy S6’s announcement is expected at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain from March 2-5, 2015. Representing the latest Samsung technologies alongside their Note lineup, this series is more targeted by professional users. Ever since its 4th generation, this series has been the best selling Android smartphone series ever. Sales may have slowed a bit but it’s still a popular Android phone.

Over the years, the line has several designs, software and build.

First Device

Announced in March 2010 and released in June the same year, Galaxy S proved to be immensely popular among users:

  • Selling about 25 million devices;
  • In several variations available globally.

Galaxy S introduced TouchWiz, a front-end user interface that became the User Interface (UX) ‘skin’ of choice on Samsung’s Android phones as well as other Samsung owned operating systems like Bada and Tizen.

Second Iteration

Announced in 2011, Galaxy S2 was well received and proved to be more popular:

  • With a reported 40 million units sold;
  • Samsung surpassed Apple as the largest smartphone maker in the world.

Galaxy S2 was awarded ‘Smartphone of 2012’ by Mobile World Congress’s Global Mobile Awards. The phone was launched with Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ and received updates up to Android 4.2 ‘Jelly Bean’.

Third Generation

The most popular series to date:

  • Sold more than 60 million devices worldwide;
  • With more than 9 million pre-orders prior to its release.

Also, the series introduced new rounded-corners that moved away from rectangular shapes designed for the first two generations.

Fourth and Fifth Iterations

Released in 2013 and 2014 respectively, these series had no huge success as the third generation. Perhaps, due to these:

  • Fewer changes in Galaxy S4, S5 and Galaxy S3:
  • Most customers did not find them that appealing.

Yet, they still managed to sell:

  • 40 million devices for Galaxy S4
  • More than 15 million devices for Galaxy S5

Samsung lost its market share and weakened its dominant position in the smartphone market.

Nasty Legal Battles

This series has been at the heart of nasty legal battles between Samsung and iPhone-series maker Apple. Apple sued Samsung for:

  • Copying its patented design;
  • In creating the first two generations.

This may have been the reason for changing S3’s design.  After suit, counter-suit and fines in several countries, their legal battles have died down. Samsung was fined a billion dollars in the United States for infringement of Apple’s design patents.

Conclusion

The Galaxy S series propelled Samsung as the biggest smartphone marker in the world. For years, the series had the best Android flagship phone available. Challenged by other smartphone makers who released popular series, this seems to slow down Galaxy S series appeal to consumers. Perhaps, the 6th iteration will prove to be king again.
